FAQ
Our technicians come to your workplace at a time that’s convenient to you. All appliances and devices are visually inspected first for any defects. This involves examining the cord, plug and strain relief. They are then tested using the PAT machine. If the appliance or device passes this test, it is tagged, logged and put back into service.
If an appliance or device fails, it is labelled “OUT OF SERVICE” with a high visibility label and the owner is notified. The owner may either decide to dispose of the appliance or device or have it repaired which we will arrange through a qualified electrician.
The Victorian Occupational Health and Safety Act (2004) states that employers have a legal obligation to provide and maintain a working environment for their employees that is safe and without risk to health. As part of this act, all electrical appliances and devices, including power boards, extension leads, electric tools, residual current devices and any other portable electrical equipment in commercial and industrial workplaces must be tested and tagged regularly to ensure their safety. Please visit the Worksafe website for more information www.worksafe.vic.gov.au
The main factor determining how often an electrical appliance or device should be tested depends on the type of environment in which it is located. Different workplaces have different test and tagging intervals for this reason. The table below will help you determine how often you need to test and tag based on the recommendations from the standards.
Building, construction and demolition | Every three months |
Factories, workshops, places of repair, manufacturing | Every six months |
Environments where equipment is prone to flexing in normal use or in a hostile environment | Every twelve months |
Environments where is equipment is not prone to flexing in normal use or is not in a hostile environment | Every five years |
Residential type areas such as motels, hotels, hostels and boarding accommodation | Every two years |
Equipment used for commercial cleaning | Every six months |
Hire equipment | Every three months |
